USE IT OR LOSE IT – OR NEVER HAVE IT
What This Means To You
If practice makes perfect, then you need to learn AND PRACTICE the two sets of skills you will need to get the job you will want.
HARD skills that you need to get a job are embedded in the academic subjects you are learning now. As a high school student or a college freshman, you are (hopefully) getting the hard skills you need to get into a hiring manager’s office. Someday, you will turn the math you learn into an accounting job, the biology you learn into a job as a nurse, the art you do in class into a career as an illustrator, the health you study into a job as a nutritionist, or the history/civics you learn into a job as an elected official.
But remember, the credential (college degree or technical/trade license) will get you into the interview. Your soft skills help you get the job, and keep the job you get.
We can virtually guarantee that the majority of high school students today are not learning enough of those soft skills you will need to keep whatever job you get. In fact, almost 90% of employers say that young job seekers do not have the necessary soft skills to be successful at work. What you don’t learn, you can’t practice. Soft skills – especially soft skills – need to be practiced.
This is not the fault of your high school or your teachers. It is their responsibility to ensure you have the academic basics you will need to advance your education beyond high school There are only so many hours in a day and academics are packed tightly into that time. But remember both sets of skills are equally important.
